Regigigas is back for two weeks only!
Pokémon Go is bringing Regigigas back from June 18 through July 1, 2021. Not only will everyone have the chance to battle it this time, but its Shiny variant will be unlocked. A lot has changed since the Colossal Pokémon was last available, but we here at iMore have everything you need to know to win this Legendary Raid. Who is Regigigas in Pokémon Go?
Originally discovered in the Sinnoh region of Gen IV, Regigigas is the leader of the Legendary Titans. Not only is it in charge of these massively powerful Legendary Pokémon, but Regigigas actually created the other Titans" Regirock, Registeel, Regice, Regielecki, and Regidrago. It is capable of controlling the other Titans, even if they are captured by a Pokémon Trainer.
In Pokémon Go, Regigigas was originally introduced in the paid Special Research event: A Colossal Discovery, and later in EX Raids. Now, Regigigas is coming back but as a Legendary Raid, so all players will be able to battle it. As a Normal type with a limited movepool, the Colossal Pokémon isn't too useful in Pokémon Go yet, but if Niantic were to add its signature move, that could change. Additionally, its Shiny variant will be available, so you won't want to skip out on this Raid, even if you happened to catch one during the previous events.
What are the best counters for Regigigas in Pokémon Go?
Regigigas is a pure Normal type capable of dealing Normal, Fighting, Psychic, and Electric type damage. Its only weakness is Fighting type. While there are many Fighting type Mega Evolutions, the only one available in Pokémon Go so far is Mega Lopunny, who doesn't perform well in this Raid; however, there are a number of really strong Fighting type Shadow Pokémon who you'll want to include in your party if possible.
Conkeldurr
From the Unova region of Gen V, Conkeldurr performs very well against the Colossal Pokémon. As a pure Fighting type, it will take super effective damage from Regigigas's Psychic type attacks, but that is the case for most of the best counters. Fortunately, Conkeldurr are pretty easy to come by, as its first stage, Timburr has been featured in events, Raids, and Eggs, and it benefits from Trade Evolution, leaving tons of Candy for powering up. If you're bringing Conkeldurr to this fight, you'll want it to know Counter and Dynamic Punch.
Lucario
Gen IV's Lucario is another excellent choice for this Raid even though its Mega Evolution has yet to be unlocked. As a Fighting and Steel type, Lucario resists Normal type damage, but takes double damage from Fighting type attacks. Unfortunately, Lucario are pretty rare. It can only be obtained through evolution, and its first stage, Riolu is only rarely found in Eggs. If you have it, Counter and Aura Sphere are the ideal moves for Lucario.
Machamp
Although it doesn't perform as well as Conkeldurr or Lucario, the Kantonian Machamp is a great choice for this Raid. It's another pure Fighting type, so Psychic attacks will be extra damaging, but it's incredibly common. Its first stage, Machop has been featured in countless ways, including its own Community Day, and Machamp itself can spawn on the map, as well as having been featured in Raids and events. On top of all that, it also benefits from Trade Evolution, so many players can create entire teams of powerful Machamp for this fight. Counter and Dynamic Punch is the moveset you'll want for your Machamp.
Breloom
From Gen III's Hoenn region, Breloom is another great counter for the Colossal Pokémon. Because of its Grass and Fighting typing, Breloom resists Electric type attacks, while it takes increased damage from Psychic. Breloom only has one other stage and takes just 50 Candy to evolve, so it's quite obtainable. If you're bringing Breloom to this fight, you'll want Counter for the fast move and Dynamic Punch for the charged move.
Hariyama
Another two stage Pokémon from the Hoenn region, Hariyama performs very well against Regigigas. It's a pure Fighting type, so it will take increased damage from Psychic attacks, but it's very common and cheap to evolve and power up. As is a trend on this list, Counter and Dynamic Punch are the moves you'll want for taking on the Colossal Pokémon.
Mega Gengar
While Mega Gengar is not a Fighting type, it does have access to a Fighting type move, and its Ghost and Poison typing give it some useful resistances here. Mega Gengar will take increased damage from Psychic like so many other counters, but it resists Normal and Fighting. It won't, however, provide a same type Mega boost, so I wouldn't go out of my way to Mega Evolve Gengar just for this fight. Still, if you already have one ready, Sucker Punch and Focus Blast are the moves you'll want.
Toxicroak
Toxicroak is the third two stage Pokémon from the Sinnoh region on this list. Like Breloom and Hariyama, its been featured in events and is pretty common, so you likely already have at least one or two and the Candy to power them up. As a Poison and Fighting type, Toxicroak resists Fighting type damage, but is extra weak against Psychic type attacks, so be sure to stock up on Potions and Revives. Its also another Pokémon that you'll want to know Counter and Dynamic Punch.
Cobalion
The first Legendary on the list, Cobalion is one of the Unova region's Legendary Swords of Justice. As a Steel and Fighting type, it resists Normal type attacks and takes increased damage from Fighting. Cobalion has also had three runs in Raids and was a Pokémon Go Battle League Legendary reward encounter, so its fairly obtainable as far as Legendaries go. Metal Claw and Sacred Sword are the moves you'll want your Cobalion to know.
Regigigas
Although there's a good chance you don't already have one, Regigigas is a great counter to itself. It will take increased damage if the Regigigas you're up against has Fighting type moves, but otherwise, it is extremely durable. Unfortunately, as we already mentioned, it's been limited to a paid event and the super limited EX Raids, so lots of players don't even have one, much less the Candy to power it up. Even if you do have the Candy to spare, that's a lot of Stardust to spend on a Pokémon that isn't too useful yet. Still, if you're bringing the Colossal Pokémon to this fight, you'll want it to know Hidden Power and Giga Impact. Focus Blast can work too, but the STAB from Giga Impact beats out the type advantage that Focus Blast has.
Sirfetch'd
Last but not least is one of the few Gen VIII Pokémon to make its way to Pokémon Go so far: Sirfetch'd. The evolution of the Galarian regional variant of the Gen I regional exclusive, Farfetch'd, Sirfetch'd is relatively new to Pokémon Go and it is a special case evolution which requires making ten Excellent Throws while its your Buddy Pokémon, so many players don't have one yet. Its a pure Fighting type, so it takes increased damage from Psychic and overall, its performance can't match Conkeldurr, Machamp, or even Hariyama. Still, if you're especially proud of your Sirfetch'd, it will need to know Counter and Close Combat to perform well against Regigigas.
Back ups?
Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:
- Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Psystrike
- Heracross with Counter and Close Combat
- Alakazam with Counter and Psychic
- Landorus (Therian forme) with Mud Shot and Superpower
- Blaziken with Counter and Blaze Kick
- Haxorus with Counter and Dragon Claw
- Gallade with Low Kick and Close Combat
- Poliwrath with Rock Smash and Dynamic Punch
- Pinsir with Bug Bite and Superpower
- Hitmonlee with Low Kick and Brick Break
- Magmortar with Karate Chop and Brick Break
- Cacturne with Sucker Punch and Dynamic Punch
- Golurk with Mud-Slap and Dynamic Punch
- Rhyperior with Mud-Slap and Super Power
- Chesnaught with Low Kick and Superpower
- Mienshao with Low Kick and Brick Break
Shadow Pokémon?
The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:
- Shadow Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch
- Shadow Hariyama with Counter and Dynamic Punch
- Shadow Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Psystrike
- Shadow Alakazam with Counter and Psychic
- Shadow Metagross with Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash
- Shadow Gallade with Low Kick and Close Combat
- Shadow Poliwrath with Rock Smash and Dynamic Punch
- Shadow Pinsir with Bug Bite and Superpower
Note: Shadow Machamp and Shadow Hariyama outperform every other Pokémon in the best counters list. Shadow Mewtwo, Shadow Alakazam, Shadow Metagross, and Shadow Gallade also perform on par with the other best counters.
How many players does it take to beat Regigigas in Pokémon Go?
With the best counters and moveset, it is technically possible for three top level trainers to beat Regigigas; however, if you're lower level or lacking the best Shadow Pokémon, you may need as many as six.
Weather conditions that can impact this Raid include:
- Partly Cloudy weather will boost Regigigas's Normal type attack.
- Wind will boost its Psychic type attack.
- Rain will boost its Electric type attack.
- Cloudy weather will boost its Fighting type attacks, as well as your Fighting type counters.
