Review: Ditch the bulky bag and go with a svelte MOSISO Laptop Sleeve

No need to add bulk to that svelte MacBook.

Laptop bags seem a bit extraneous to me when there are so many purses and backpacks with laptop pockets built-in. The problem is that your precious MacBook can jostle around and get scratched if the bag is stuffed full of other gear. My solution to this problem is a slim laptop sleeve, and MOSISO's Laptop Sleeve is working out well for me so far.

The main advantage to using a laptop sleeve is that it doesn't add much bulk or weight to your device, but it protects the MacBook from everyday bumps and scratches during commutes or business trips. In addition, with a laptop sleeve, you can slip the be-sleeved MacBook into the standard laptop pocket of any bag or backpack, and it fits right in. It's also easy and convenient to tuck under your arm and go. MOSISO's Laptop Sleeve for MacBook serves this purpose well, and it looks good doing it.

Bottom line: The MOSISO Laptop Sleeve is a slim, lightweight solution for toting your MacBook. The simple design is professional and attractive, with 30 colors to choose from!

The Good

  • Attractive, simple design
  • Slim and lightweight
  • Water-resistant
  • Lots of colors to choose from

The Bad

  • Needs extra cushion around the corners
  • It's hard to straighten out if crushed or creased

MOSISO Laptop Sleeve: Price and availability

As far as laptop sleeves go, I find the MOSISO sleeve to be quite affordable. It's only $14 at Amazon or Walmart and a little more expensive at $20 on the official MOSISO website. If it goes on promotion, we'll be sure to let you know in our deals section.

MOSISO Laptop Sleeve: Slim and sensible

My favorite thing about this sleeve from MOSISO is the thin, lightweight material that's easy to slip under your arm as you're walking out the door. It slides easily into my bags or big purses, as well as any backpack with a laptop pocket. I find this much more convenient to tote around than a bulky laptop bag. Also, the water resistance is a nice touch. I got caught out in the rain once with this sleeve, and no drops found their way to my laptop.

The MOSISO Laptop Sleeve slides easily into my bags or big purses, as well as any backpack with a laptop pocket.

It's also streamlined and simple, with an attractive design that fits into both professional and casual settings. I feel comfortable taking this sleeve into business meetings as well as informal meetups with friends. Since there are so many colors available, you can also choose the one that best reflects your personal style. I like the light gray color (yes, I'm a bit vanilla), but at this price, you could buy several to go with different outfits!

As for protection, the MOSISO provides a basic barrier against scratches and bumps, but it's not great insurance for major drops. The fuzzy soft interior layer certainly protects against scratches, but I think an extra bumper in the corners is in order. I'll go into that in the next section.

MOSISO Laptop Sleeve: Where are my bumpers?

My main complaint with the MOSISO Laptop Sleeve is that it lacks an extra barrier of protection in the corners. The only reason I know this is because my son knocked my new MacBook Air off the kitchen table while it was in this sleeve. After a frantic scramble to check, I found a tiny dent on the corner of my beautiful laptop. It's not a tragedy, but it taught me to take more care with my computer, even when it's in the sleeve. I think a heavier reinforced foam bumper around the edges or in the corners of the MOSISO Laptop Sleeve could prevent dents like these.

The only other thing I've noticed about this laptop sleeve is that it does not like to be crushed or creased. It got a bit crushed once when my backpack was overstuffed, and the sleeve was creased in one corner. Unfortunately, that crease seems to be here to stay, despite my halfhearted attempt to iron it out. This doesn't really affect the usability of the sleeve, but I'm not too fond of the look of it.

MOSISO Laptop Sleeve: Competition

There are plenty of laptop sleeves on the market to choose from. One that is similar to the MOSISO Laptop Sleeve in size and appearance is the tomtoc Protective Laptop Sleeve. This one actually does have the foam bumper built-in to protect the corners of your MacBook, although those bumpers may add a bit of bulk and weight. It comes in several colors, but there are fewer to choose from. Also, the tomtoc sleeve is about $10 more expensive than the MOSISO. However, these laptop sleeves will serve the same general purpose, so choosing between the two will depend on your budget and style preferences.

MOSISO Laptop Sleeve: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if ...

  • You need basic protection for your MacBook during travel and commutes.
  • You don't want to lug around a bulky laptop bag.
  • You like a simple, no-nonsense design style.

You shouldn't buy this if...

  • You're really rough on your MacBook.
  • You can't abide a crease or two over time.
4 out of 5

Overall, despite the silly crease, I find the MOSISO Laptop Sleeve to be a great product for the price. It's made of water-resistant materials, it looks nice, and it slips easily into most backpacks and purses. Although the affordable sleeve doesn't have reinforced bumpers inside the corners, it does provide reasonable protection against everyday bumps and scratches as you go about your day with MacBook in hand. Finally, it comes in just about every color you can imagine so that it can fit into anyone's personal style.

Bottom line: You don't have to buy a bulky laptop bag to carry your MacBook on the move. The MOSISO Laptop Sleeve protects your MacBook from everyday wear and tear, and the slim profile will slip into most backpacks and purses.
