Could the iPhone finally get good at automatically switching between cellular and WiFi?
A new tool for developers might fix the dreaded situation of slow performance because you are hanging on for hope with a slow WiFi network.
As reported by MacRumors, Apple has released a new tool that will enable developers to prioritize a 5G connection over WiFi if the WiFi connection is insecure or slow. The feature will work with iPhones and iPads running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15.
The tool comes in the form of a profile called "5G Preferred Over Wi-Fi" that developers can install on devices running the fourth or later beta of iOS 15 or iPadOS 15.
5G devices running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 can automatically prioritize connecting via 5G instead of WiFi when the performance of WiFi networks you visit occasionally is slow, or when you are connected to captive or insecure WiFi networks. Install the 5G Preferred Over Wi-Fi profile ("profile") on devices running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 Beta 4 or greater to greatly increase the likelihood of seeing 5G preferred over Wi-Fi connections and to ensure your networking path logic is optimized for situations where 5G will be preferred. As mentioned in the report, iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 already contains a feature that will prefer a 5G connection over a WiFi connection if the performance of the 5G connection is better. This latest tool will seek to improve that capability even further.
5G first came to Apple with the introduction of the iPhone 12 back in 2020. Apple is expected to launch iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 this fall alongside a slew of new products, including the iPhone 13.
