What you need to know

  • Dell has a new UltraSharp 4K Webcam.
  • It delivers HDR 4K video for $200.
  • It looks a lot like Apple's iSight camera of old.

A brand new UltraSharp webcam from Dell has got us all nostalgic about Apple's iSight camera, following the company's release today.

Dell has announced a new 4K UltraSharp Webcam that delivers 4K HDR video, advanced AI framing, facial recognition, and more, check it out!

Yet we can't help but notice the design similarities to Apple's old iSight camera, a 720p behemoth from 2003 that connected to your device using Firewire (ask someone older than you).

Dell's new camera has an 8.3MP sensor and can record or stream video at 4K in 30 or 24 FPS, it can also do up to 60FPS in either 1080p or 720p.

An impressive spec sheet automatically puts the UltraSharp into contention to be one of the best webcams in 2021, competing with devices like the Logitech Brio which also delivers 4K video.

In the age of remote connection and online working, webcams are more important than ever before when it comes to feeling connected, yet many of Apple's devices, such as the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro still only offer users a 720p webcam. The new M1 iMac offers a fairly significant boost up to 1080p, backed by strong image signal processing that's powered by Apple silicon and the M1 chip. But if you want to go beyond full HD quality you'll have to look externally, which is why Dell's new UltraSharp Camera might well be an excellent premium option for people who rely on a webcam for business calls, or even for streamers who could benefit from the UltraSharp's design which means it can be mounted on a monitor, saving space in any setup.
