Apple records biggest-ever quarter for PC shipments in India, says IDC

India's PC market as a whole apparently saw massive growth.

What you need to know

  • A new report says that Apple has recorded its biggest quarter for PC shipments in India.
  • New figures from IDC suggest they have climbed by more than 300% year on year.
  • Apple reportedly took around 5.4% of the market sharing, tying ASUS for fifth place.

New figures suggest that Apple has enjoyed its biggest-ever quarter for PC shipments in India, up some 335% on the same quarter in 2020.

According to IDC figures show India's traditional PC market (desktops, notebooks, and workstations) has grown 73.1% year-on-year in 1Q21, marking the highest-ever first-quarter shipments in India with some 3.1 million units. Specifically, Apple reportedly had a bumper quarter:

Apple recorded its biggest quarter for PC shipments in India and tied for the fifth position with ASUS. Its shipments grew 335.5% YoY and 45.3% from the previous quarter. It also replaced ASUS for the fourth position in the consumer segment.

Apple and ASUS were in fact tied for fifth place, taking 5.4% of the Q1 market share. According to IDC's figures, Apple's shipments climbed from just 38,000 units last year to 167,000 in the same quarter this year, marking year-on-year growth of 335%.

The growth has no doubt been fueled in part by the opening of Apple's online store in the country in September of last year. From that report:

Apple has today opened its online store in India following an announcement last week.

Apple India is now available online, and customers will be greeted by traditionally-inspired graphic and the words:

Namaste. The Apple Store online is open. Here are just some of the great advantages exclusive to shopping directly with us.

The report says growth in India is being fuelled mostly by notebooks, suggesting devices like Apple's new M1 Macbook Air and MacBook Pro are proving particularly popular.
