- It releases holiday 2022.
During today's The Game Awards, we got to see a bunch of new video game premiers and announcements. One of these was the official reveal for Sonic's upcoming open-world game, Sonic Frontiers. However, Sega is referring to it as an "open-zone" game, keeping with Sonic vernacular. This game was originally teased during Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary stream, but the name hadn't been officially confirmed until now.
In the video, we see Sonic running through vast forests and realistic-looking world. During the short video, the blue blur runs around massive ruins with plant life growing all over them hinting at a civilization that has mysteriously ceased to be. Enormous machines also make an appearance with one almost stomping on our favorite hedgehog.
It looks like this is a very different kind of Sonic game from what we've seen previously. It's unclear just how big this game will be, so we'll have to wait until more information gets revealed. So far, only Sonic has been seen within the game, so we also do not know if Tails, Knuckles, or any of the many other characters will be in this game.
The game will come to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X|S, and PC during holiday 2022.
