For Pokémon Go Fest 2021, Niantic is bringing back every Legendary Raid for one day only. On Sunday, July 18, Giratina will return to Raids, alongside dozens of other Legenday Pokémon. Who is Giratina Altered forme in Pokémon Go?
Originally from the Pokémon world, Giratina is a Legendary Pokémon who was banished to another dimension known as the Distortion World because of its violent nature. Giratina can still cross dimensions at will, but the gravity of the real world forces it to take on its Altered Forme. Sometimes seen in cemeteries, Giratina is fiercely defensive of the Distortion World and will battle any Pokémon or person across dimensions should they bring harm to its home.
In Pokémon Go. the Altered Forme Giratina isn't quite the powerhouse its Origin Forme is. It has a lower attack stat and its moves are disappointing to say the least. However, both formes of Giratina use the same Candy, so you'll still want to spend a little extra time catching the Altered forme for the Candy.
What are the best counters for Giratina Altered forme in Pokémon Go?
As a Ghost and Dragon type, Giratina can deal Ghost, Dragon, and Rock type damage. It has five different weaknesses: Ghost, Ice, Dragon, Dark, and Fairy. With the introduction of Mega Evolution, there are a number of winning strategies here.
Mega Gengar
Best of the best, Mega Gengar should be your first choice for countering Giratina. This Poison and Ghost type will take increased damage from Giratina's Ghost type moves, but the Mega Boost it provides to other Ghost types on the field make it well worth the investment. Make sure to coordinate with the rest of your Raid party to make the most of that advantage. You'll want your Mega Gengar to know Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball.
Mega Houndoom
Although it won't do quite as much damage as Mega Gengar, Mega Houndoom is an excellent choice for this Raid. A Dark and Fire type, it takes increased damage from Giratina's Rock type attack, but resists Ghost type damage. Make sure to coordinate with your Raid party to make the most of its Dark type Mega Boost. Snarl and Foul Play are the moves you'll want your Mega Houndoom to know.
Rayquaza
The mascot of Pokémon Emerald, Rayquaza performs very well against Giratina. As a Dragon and Flying type, both Dragon and Rock type moves deal super effective damage, but Rayquaza's total damage output more than makes up for it. Rayquaza has also been available many times now, so most active players have at least one or two already powered up. Dragon Tail and Outrage is the moveset you're looking for.
Salamence
A psuedo-Legendary Dragon and Flying type, Salamence is a fair bit easier to get than Rayquaza and an excellent counter for Giratina. The gen III final evolution of Bagon is also weak to Dragon and Rock type moves, but will be dealing super effective damage with Dragon Tail and Outrage the whole time. Having been the star of a Community Day on top of several other events, most active Trainers have a few they can add to their team for this Raid.
Palkia
The mascot of Pokémon Pearl and the upcoming Pokémon Shining Pearl, Palkia is a Water and Dragon type. It will still take super effective damage from Giratina's Dragon type moves, but it only takes normal damage from the Rock or Ghost type moves. You probably can't make a whole team of Palkia, but if you are bringing it along, the ideal moveset is Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor.
Darkrai
The Mythical Dark type Darkrai has been made available a few times since its introduction during the 2019 Halloween Event. It is a hard hitter as the strongest Dark type in the game and will make quick work of Giratina. It is resistant to Ghost type moves, and takes normal damage from both Dragon and Rock type moves, making it far more durable overall than the Dragon type counters. If you're bringing Darkrai to this Raid, Snarl paired with Shadow Ball are the best moves in a vaccum. However Dark Pulse can also work well when paired with Mega Houndoom or Mega Gyarados.
Garchomp
A gen IV psuedo-Legendary, Garchomp is the Dragon and Ground type final evolution of Gible. Because of its secondary Ground typing, Garchomp takes reduced damage from Giratina's Ancient Power. Since being featured in a number of events, including a Community Day, most active players have had the chance to add Garchomp to their roster. Dragon Tail and Outrage are the moves you want your Garchomp to know going up against Giratina.
Mega Gyarados
Another great Mega Pokémon to consider is Mega Gyarados. As a Water and Dark type, it resists Giratina's Ghost type moves, and it has no weaknesses relevant to this Raid. You'll want to coordinate with the rest of your Raid party to make the most of the Dark type Mega Boost. Bite and Crunch are the moves you'll want your Mega Gyarados to know here.
Dragonite
Despite its status as a psuedo-Legendary, Dragonite has been made available in a number of ways since the start of Pokémon Go. Most players can build whole teams of this Dragon and Flying type after its Community Day and its Special Research. It takes super effective damage from Rock and Dragon type moves, so don't expect it to last terribly long, but with Dragon Tail and Outrage, it will take a significant chunk out of Giratina's health before it faints.
Haxorus
A pure Dragon type introduced in gen V, Haxorus, is the final evolution of Axew. It takes double damage from Dragon type moves, but can withstand Ghost, and Rock type moves well enough. Axew aren't super easy to come by, so you probably don't have a ton of this Pokémon, but if you do, it is a solid counter for Giratina. The ideal moveset for this Raid is Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw.
Back ups?
Although most players will be able to make a team of the best counters, if you're finding a gap in your team, there are plenty of back ups who work well in larger groups. Just make sure you're dodging and any of the following could be a decent back up:
- Zekrom with Dragon Breath and Outrage
- Dialga with Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor
- Galarian Darmanitan with Ice Fang and Avalanche
- Weavile with Snarl and Avalanche
- Mega Abomasnow with Powder Snow and Weather Ball
- Giratina (Origin forme) with Dragon Tail and Shadow Ball
- Gengar with Lick and Shadow Ball.
- Chandelure with Hex and Shadow Ball.
- Reshiram with Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor
- Mamoswine with Powder Snow and Avalanche
- Mega Charizard X with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw
- Latios with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw
- Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
- Yveltal with Snarl and Dark Pulse
- Kyurem with Dragon Breath and Blizzard
- Glaceon with Frost Breath and Avalanche
- Hydreigon with Dragon Breath and Dark Pulse
- Mega Charizard Y with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw
- Gardevoir with Charm and Dazzling Gleam.
- Togekiss with Charm and Dazzling Gleam
- Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
- Absol with Snarl and Dark Pulse
- Granbull with Charm and Play Rough
- Latias with Dragon Breath and Outrage
- Honchkrow with Snarl and Dark Pulse
Shadow Pokémon?
The rebalance of Shadow Pokémon rescued from Team GO Rocket make them excellent glass cannons. Not only are their stats boosted, but during special events or with Elite TMs, it's possible to change their moves. If you happen to have any of the following Pokémon with the right moveset, they will work very well in this Raid:
- Shadow Salamence with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Shadow Dragonite with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Shadow Mamoswine with Powder Snow and Avalanche
- Shadow Weavile with Snarl and Avalanche
- Shadow Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
- Shadow Gardevoir with Charm and Dazzling Gleam
- Shadow Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
- Shadow Honchkrow with Snarl and Dark Pulse
- Shadow Absol with Snarl and Payback
- Shadow Granbull with Charm and Play Rough
- Shadow Ursaring with Shadow Claw and Play Rough
- Shadow Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play
- Shadow Banette with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
Note: Shadow Salamence, Shadow Dragonite, Shadow Mamoswine, Shadow Weavile, and Shadow Mewtwo all outperform every non-Mega Pokémon in the best counters list.
How many players does it take to beat Giratina Altered forme in Pokémon Go?
It is technically possible for two people to take on an Altered forme Giratina under the best circumstances. However, if you're lower level or lacking in the best counters, you may need as many as five.
Weather conditions that can impact this Raid include:
- Wind will boost Giratina's Dragon type moves, as well as your Dragon type counters
- Fog will boost its Ghost type moves, as well as both your Ghost and Dark type counters
- Partly Cloudy Weather will boost Giratina's Rock type move
- Cloudy Weather will boost your Fairy type counters
- Snow will boost your Ice type counters
