What you need to know

  • Apple is experiencing massive growth in India according to data from Canalys.
  • Personal computers jumped 335.5% and tablets jumped 144%.

Apple is right on the tail of Asus in India now.

Apple has become the fifth-largest personal computer brand in India in the first quarter of 2021.

In a new report from analytics firm Canalys (via DigiTimes), the company reached 208,00 units sold of its desktop, notebook, and tablet computers (I'm not sure we can call the iPad a tablet computer). The firm points to the company's opening of the online Apple Store as the reason for Apple's jump in market share in the country. Apple had opened the online Apple Store in India in September of 2020.

According to the report, Apple's personal computer shipments in India grew by 335.5% in the first quarter of 2021 with tablet shipments growing 144%.

Research firm IDC's figures also show Apple's PC shipments in India (excluding tablets) grew 335.5% on year in the first quarter and only lagged Asustek's by around 2,000 units. Apple and Asustek were tied for fifth place in IDC's rankings for PC brands in India in the quarter.

CMR's figures also showed that India's tablet shipments went down 34% sequentially in the first quarter of 2021, while Apple was the second largest tablet brand in the country with a 29% market share. Apple its tablet shipments increase 144% on year, surpassing the original second-place Samsung Electronics. Of the 29% market share, 17pp came from iPad 8, and 9pp from iPad Air 2020.

Today's report lines up with earlier data from IDC in May. While Canalys' data did not touch on iPhone performance, a report from Economic Times says that Apple is selling at least one million units per quarter over the last two quarters.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 13 lineup this fall. The long-rumored 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro may also make an appearance as well.

MacBook Air with M1

Apple's newest MacBook Air is silent but deadly, a potent combination of class design and a new, ultra-fast M1 SoC.
