Spotify brings podcast timestamped sharing to its iOS app

Share the best part of podcast episodes with ease.

What you need to know

  • Spotify has launched podcast timestamp sharing.
  • The company is also bringing Canvas to Snapchat and launching a new sharing menu for its mobile app.

Spotify just made podcasts a more social experience.

The company has announced timestamp sharing for podcasts. The new feature will allow you to share a podcast episode with a friend from a particular timestamp. This will make it easy to share a specific part of an episode with friends rather than having to tell them which part of the podcast episode to navigate to.

With new podcast timestamp sharing, you can now share podcast episodes beginning at a particular moment—so you can make sure your friends tune in at that one part you think they'll love. (Previously, users were only able to share the link to an entire episode.) To share a timestamp, just tap the "share" button while listening to the episode, use the "switch to share" feature at the current playtime, and then select where you want to share the content to. Those on the receiving end just need to tap the shared link to jump right in and start listening.

The company is also bringing its Canvas feature to Snapchat and unveiling a new sharing menu on its mobile app.

Spotify's Canvas feature turns static song pages into video-art showcases. These bring a whole new listening experience for fans and music lovers. Now, in addition to sharing your favorite tracks with Canvas via Instagram Stories, you can also use Snapchat.

We're unveiling an updated sharing menu on mobile with a clearer layout, a way to preview what you're sharing, and an improved destination list. By previewing the Canvas you're sharing on Instagram Stories or Snapchat ahead of time, you'll be able to visualize how it will be presented on your social channel. Plus, your available messaging and social media destinations will be dynamically populated based on the apps you have installed, and laid out clearly in an easy-to-view grid.

It appears that the new features are rolling out immediately. iMore was able to see the new podcast timestamp feature already present in the Spotify app. This is a great feature and one that is currently missing from Apple's own Apple Podcasts app. The podcast wars continue to heat up!
