What you need to know

  • Dragon Quest is a video game franchise developed by Square Enix that most often falls within the JRPG genre.
  • A livestream event celebrating the franchise's 35th anniversary is scheduled for May 26, 2021.
  • The presentation will cover current games and some new information about unknown titles.

A report by Famitsu has revealed that a livestream meant to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series will premiere on May 26, 2021 at 11:30 p.m. EDT. The two-part presentation will cover different topics in each section, according to Square Enix. The first part of the presentation will focus on the more recent games in the Dragon Quest series, such as Dragon Quest X, a Japanese-exclusive Nintendo Switch game.

The interesting aspect of this news report, however, is the fact that Yuji Horii is scheduled to make an appearance and shed some new information on a "new line-up" in the Dragon Quest universe (via Nintendo Life).

For now, fans are unsure whether this new information refers to the localization of already established titles, or whether a potential "Dragon Quest XII" lies on the horizon. The most recent spin-off titles in the series such as Dragon Quest Builders 2 have received tons of praise from players and critics alike, and fans are open to even more genres within the universe. The latest mainline game in the series, sporting its famously long title, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition was extremely popular among western Nintendo Switch gamers, referred to as one of the best JRPGs released in recent times.
