It looks to all hinge on the iPhone 13.

  • Ross Young thinks LTPO displays could overtake the market by 2023.
  • The prediction is based on Apple bringing LTPO to the iPhone.

LTPO displays could overtake the smartphone industry by 2023 if Apple brings it to the iPhone 13.

According to Ross Young, the founder and lead analyst of DisplaySearch and DSCC, the firm now believes that LTPO panels will overtake LTPS as soon as 2023. This prediction is based on the idea that Apple will largely switch over to the technology for the iPhone.

We now predict LTPO backplanes to overtake LTPS in AMOLED smartphones on a $US basis in 2023 with a big uptake from Apple over that period...

LTPO technology was first introduced in the Apple Watch. The display technology allows for a variable refresh rate, something that Apple has been developing in order to bring 120Hz to the iPhone without sacrificing battery life.

According to an earlier report from TheElec, only the pro-level iPhone 13 models will feature LTPO displays, with all iPhones getting it next year.

Samsung Display will be the exclusive supplier used by Apple for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels used in the two highest tier models of its next iPhone, TheElec has learned.

Both models of iPhone 13 will use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistors (TFT) OLED panels made by Samsung Display.

Apple's iPhone 13 will have four models and all of them will use OLED panels. The top two models will use LTPO OLED that can support 120Hz refresh rate.
